Senior Health Tips
If you are among the living you are among the aging. Unless of course you have found the elusive fountain of youth, you have undoubtedly heard that physical fitness is important for your health and emotional well being. You are never too young to begin being physically active; likewise, it is never too late to teach an old dog new tricks. Here are a few senior health tips to get your blood flowing and start you on a path of emotional wellness.
No matter what your age, even simple moderate exercises are beneficial and can easily be worked into your daily routines. If you are fairly healthy, beginning an exercise routine is simple. If you have any health conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, it is recommended that you first speak with your physiotherapist before beginning your exercise program.
The key to any successful program is to do activities that you already enjoy, so it doesn’t feel like work. Also, an activity in groups usually increases motivation and encourages socialization at the same time, so if you don’t want to go at it alone, finding group activities is a terrific way to start.
A great way to begin exercising is to incorporate a daily walk into your schedule. Begin slowly and at a pace that will not over-exert you. Set a goal such as, “Today I will take a 20 minute walk.” Complete that goal for the first week or two. Then increase your time by 10 minutes every other week until you are at a 45 minute regime. Or you can choose to walk for a lesser time, but pick up the briskness for increased cardiovascular benefits.
Other endurance activities include dancing, swimming and cycling-all of which can be done alone or with a group/partner. Simply starting with as few as 10 minutes and gradually working up to 30 minutes can do wonders for your health. Group activities will promote laughing, another great remedy for staying young! Gardening, raking or mowing the yard are great physical exercises for elders and still offer health benefits. Any activity you enjoy can be considered exercise as long as you do it consistently and work up to at least 30 minutes and a moderate to brisk pace for your heart.
Physiotherapy exercises work wonders particularly for those who have sustained injuries or have suffered physical declining health from illnesses. Physiotherapy treatments can be done in home and each program can be tailored to an individual’s need and endurance level.
After being assessed by a professional and determining your endurance, range of motion, posture and functionality programs such as Laser Therapy, Electrical Stimulation or Negative Bio-Feedback are all beneficial programs. Laser therapy uses red and infrared lights to relieve pain and pressure and decrease inflammation. Electrical stimulation utilizes small bursts of electricity to “shock” and stimulate your muscles and increases your range of motion. Negative Bio-Feedback utilizes a series of activities to change the way you think and has had successes in treating patients with depression and anxiety.
Finally, many seniors are opting for massage treatments in placement of or in addition to medications. Massages done by licensed massage therapists yield such benefits as improving mobility and flexibility and improves circulation throughout the body. These all can reduce inflammation and stress as well as increases energy.
Remember before beginning any exercise routine to dress according to the weather conditions. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear and consult a physiotherapist if you notice any changes in your health or well being.
